Metamaterials in Sensing![]()
Caption: Prime develops materials solutions based on both metal metmaterial designs (a/left) and all-dielectric designs (b/right). One of the challenges in designing sensor solutions for extreme environments is that typically the more extreme the environment, the fewer the materials that are available for use in that environment. For example, there are a very limited number materials for use in optical sensor design above 1800F (not to mention above 3000F), there are very limited material solutions that can withstand directed energy-type microwave power densities of a MegaWatt/square centimeter, etc. Metamaterials significantly expand the performance capabilities of many materials and therefore put many more tools in the tool kit of the engineer. Prime designs both metallic and all-dielectric metamaterials using non-resonant and resonant structures with a particularly strong expertise with guided mode resonance (GMR) metamaterial design.
